Jazz in Rotterdam - how we started

Rotterdam is known worldwide for its deep rooted connection to Jazz - mostly thanks to the annual globally recognized North Sea Jazz Festival, and numerous talented musicians that come to or from our shores each year.

When we first moved here to Rotterdam we couldn't find a jazz club to while away our Sunday afternoons. So we decided to begin with JAZZ ROOTS TM. Our very own way of collating and curating the best Jazz musicians the Netherlands and beyond has to offer.

Rotterdam resident and musician Sven Figee brings the best of the best to the table at Jazz Roots.

We would be nothing without our talented team of performers, crew and behind the scenes gurus who make sure that we are here today.  It’s been a labor of love, and we’re so excited to have it come to life.

Een avond rauwe soul en opzwepende jazz met Sven Hammond + special guest

We return on 24.11.19, and for November’s guest, we welcome the glorious Shirma Rouse.

Shirma Rouse is a musical force to be reckoned with. Raised in the Caribbean island of Sint Eustatius, she moved to the Netherlands at age 19 to study and soon started her musical career. At first, she mainly provided backing vocals for a range of artists, among which Chaka Khan, Michael Bolton, Alain Clark, Candy Dulfer, Extince, Wouter Hamel, and Glennis Grace. She sang with Holiday On Ice and the Metropole Orkest, and was the regular backing vocalist for bestselling Dutch singer Anouk. Shirma also accompanied her at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, where she was crowned Best Backing Vocalist of the whole event by The Eurovision Times.

She released her first album Chocolate Coated Dreams in 2010, all by herself . It was followed by Shirma Sings Aretha in 2012 and Shout It Out Loud in 2014.

She is currently touring with her ‘Legends we’ve lost’ show, followed by the ‘Christmas Gospel sessions’, so we are delighted she’s able to join us on 24th November
